Episode Three
S1 E3: The Moab Rope Swing
Fear hits differently when you’re standing on the edge of a cliff in the Utah desert, knowing the only way forward is to jump.
For the third episode of I’m Brendan and This Scares Me, I traveled to Moab, Utah, to take on one of the most terrifying challenges of the season: stepping off a massive cliff and swinging through the canyon below.
As a firefighter, veteran, and father, I’ve spent years learning how to stay calm when things get uncomfortable. But standing above the desert with nothing but a harness, a rope, and hundreds of feet of open air beneath me brought fear to an entirely different level.
In Episode Three, I head deep into the incredible landscape surrounding Moab to face the rope swing.
The scenery is breathtaking.
The height is terrifying.
And eventually, there’s only one thing left to do.
Jump.
Standing at the edge, every instinct in my body was telling me not to step off. There’s no slowly easing yourself into something like this. At some point, you have to stop thinking about what could happen and trust yourself enough to go.
Then you take the step.
For a few seconds, there’s nothing beneath you.
The fear, the anticipation, and everything running through your head disappear as you fall into the canyon before the rope catches and sends you swinging across the desert.
This episode isn’t just about jumping off a cliff.
It’s about that moment we all experience when fear tells us to stay exactly where we are—and deciding to move forward anyway.
Because sometimes conquering fear doesn’t mean you stop being afraid.
Sometimes it means being terrified and jumping anyway.
Fear is temporary. Stories last forever.
